Germany’s extreme weather conditions prompt disruptions

Large portions of Germany face heavy snowfall, black ice, freezing rain and winds, which reached the country overnight and on Sunday, the German Meteorological Service (DWD) said.

National carrier Lufthansa had warned that severe weather may cause disruptions to flights in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The weather has also caused disruptions to trains in several regions of the country.

The DWD has issued frost warnings in the area between the Black Forest, Lake Constance and the Bavarian Forest, urging drivers and pedestrians to stay home where possible.

Black ice can be harmful to road users because it is difficult to detect and incredibly slippery.

The DWD had warned of a low-pressure formula with snow and freezing rain that would move from the southwest to the northeast on Sunday.

Severe weather warnings were issued, but all were canceled as of Sunday afternoon.

Dozens of road injuries have been reported in the western states of Germany.

Temperatures are expected to build up on Monday, but will be released soon on Tuesday.  

The United Kingdom has also been experiencing extreme weather, as the country grapples with a week-long spell of wintry conditions.
