Largest known Majiayao cultural settlement discovered in Gansu, China

LANZHOU, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) — Chinese archaeologists discovered the largest known site of Majiayao culture in Lintao County, northwest China’s Gansu Province, a joint archaeological team at the Siwa site reported Tuesday.

The discovery at the Siwa site in Lintao marks the first-ever finding of a central settlement of the Majiayao culture in the past century, following seven years of excavations. The settlement site covers an area of over one million square meters and spans several centuries, said the team.

Archaeologists have also discovered numerous sites of homes, pits, ovens and tombs, as well as imaginable paths, giant spaces of piled up earth and other remains.

The discovery reveals the configuration and significance of a giant agreement dating back 5,000 years on the western Loess Plateau, highlighting early social advances and civilizations in northwestern China, according to a team leader.
