Three men from the United Kingdom have been charged in connection to the death of Curry House owner Sharif Rahman in Owen Sound, Ont., who died following an assault in 2023.
Rahman died after chasing three men out of his restaurant over an unpaid bill.
On Wednesday, police said Robert Evans, 24, had been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident.
They also said Robert Busby Evans, 47, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offence, while Barry Evans, 54, was arrested on October 29 and charged with accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offense.
The 3 men are awaiting extradition to the United Kingdom, before the OPP.
Ontario Provincial Police Det. Insp Jane Conway told where the men came from when she spoke to reporters on Wednesday, but thanked Police Scotland for their efforts.
“Although it is too early to give a timetable for extradition, we are pleased to announce that the defendants have been arrested,” he said.
Conway also provided details about the men’s connections that he said could jeopardize extradition efforts.
When asked why they were in Canada, Conway only said, “All three individuals are residents of the United Kingdom and they were here visiting Canada.”
It’s been 17 months since Rahman died after a brutal attack in the small Ontario town of Georgian Bay.
The restauranter was left in a coma following the beating in the small community located on an inlet on Georgian Bay, about three hours north of Toronto.
He died about a week later, when Owen Sound police questioned the Ontario Provincial Police.
“Soon after, police learned that the three male suspects had fled the country, leading to collaboration with international partners to coordinate their arrests abroad,” Conway said.
Rahman’s death hit the small Ontario community hard and there was an outpouring of support for his family.
Mayor Ian Boddy said shortly after the attack that Sharif is a “prominent member of our community, devoting his time to city and county committees, as well as a successful businessman and committed man. “
“His passing is a tragic loss for our community, and it is a time to come together with compassion and support. Let us all reflect on Sharif’s kindness and his love of the community by treating everyone with the same generosity he embodied,” the mayor added.
On Wednesday, Owen Sound Police Chief Craig Ambrose said Rahman’s homicide “has shaken the very fabric of our city and beyond. “
“Sharif was known by many for his generosity, community involvement and the local restaurant, the Curry House,” Ambrose said.
