A 12-year-old Shawnee boy is being hailed as a hero after walking two miles down the road at night to look for his seriously injured stepfather following a car accident.

Jordan Gardner and his stepfather, Devin Gardner, were traveling to Alabama when they were involved in a serious twist of fate on Interstate 40 in Arkansas.

After the collision, Jordan, who has autism and aphasia of speech, abandoned the crashed vehicle and walked down the road for help.

Deputy James Graves with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched after a call reported a child walking on the road. After locating Jordan, Graves noticed that the boy was frantic and had difficulty communicating.

“He had some communication issues and it took us a minute to figure out what was wrong,” Graves said.

Jordan told officers his father didn’t notice when he got out of the vehicle.

“Was your father awake when you left?” said Graves who asked Jordan. The boy replied, “No, he is dead. “

As Officer Kendall Smith searched the scene of the accident, the dispatcher told him that the vehicle had crashed into a guardrail.

Smith discovered the wrecked and, moments later, heard Devin Gardner’s cries for help.

“As soon as I stopped, I heard a scream for help. I was like, he’s okay, he’s alive. A certain sense of relief came over me,” Smith said.

Devin Gardner found him seriously injured but alive.

The rear windshield of the vehicle was shattered, the trunk was destroyed and the driver’s appearance was particularly damaged.

“The fact that the child crawled out and the father was still alive is nothing short of a miracle,” Smith said.

Jordan, who crossed four lanes of traffic at night to stop vehicles, was left with minimal injuries.

“I’ll be doing it for a long time,” Graves said. “He’s brave. “

Devin Gardner is expected to leave the hospital and enter rehab in the coming days.

The cause of the twist of fate is still under investigation.
