Union Pacific teams hide the derailment of an exercise in Carroll County.
A UP spokesman said about 36 rails derailed last night about two miles east of Glidden. No injuries were reported and an investigation into the incident is underway.
Country Glidden resident Connie Bock says she and her husband have lived about a quarter mile from the railroad tracks for more than 40 years. They are used to hearing all kinds of noises during exercise, but this is something completely different.
“We were watching the Olympics and we regularly have a lot of semi-finals and water trailers in the spring. They made a lot of noise, but the noise continued and got louder and louder and then we might feel it in the house,” says Bock. “I passed out and looked and ran in and said, ‘Should I call the police?’The exercise has gone off the rails. ‘”
Bock, the sound of the derailment persisted and lasted for more than a minute.
“Our dogs started barking and don’t bother much with trains,” he says, “but they barked at that point. “
The derailed coaches were not carrying any hazardous materials, but it didn’t take long for the Bock family to realize this, so they became concerned.
Union Pacific’s goal now is to get the main line up and running as temporarily as possible. It is unclear exactly how long this may take, however, UP blocks the lines from operating within a few days.
