Trump’s crusade had at least a month’s warning that President Biden would end his re-election campaign as a credible scenario, and they let everyone within earshot know that if that happened, they were ready. It is, and they weren’t.
Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance admitted to Minnesota donors over the weekend that Kamala Harris unnerved Trump:
We have all been hit by a small political coup. The bad news is that Kamala Harris doesn’t have the same background as Joe Biden, because no matter what he says, Kamala is much younger. And Kamala Harris, obviously, does not fight in the same way. like Joe Biden.
A punch is a low blow, given without caution to an unsuspecting victim. It is appropriate for Vance to frame this in terms of victimization, the perpetual stance of MAGA followers. Their constant laments about fairness are born of the misinterpretation conservatives have made for decades that left-wing special interests are driven by a politics of “grievances. “The result was a transformation of the older white electorate into their own special interest group, with a parallel set of grievances reflecting what they had long opposed. This is how lies such as anti-white discrimination are obtained.
Back in the real world, Harris’s rise to the nomination was not without caution or preparation time. The failure of Trump’s crusade to achieve this remains inexplicable and baffling. They seemed committed to what they saw as a winning crusade strategy opposed to Biden. Possibly they would have been right about that; We will never know.
But in the meantime, there’s a crusade to undertake, and Trump finds himself with an opponent whose age and vigor are no challenge but, more importantly, who has captured the zeitgeist in a way that Trump sucks and can’t reproduce. Its appeal to the masses has been more limited than that of the wonderful cultural movements of our time. He practices professional wrestling, not the Olympics.
MAGA court cases about how unfair everything is pale before the transcendent power and enthusiasm Harris generates in the first place.
Given the opportunity to repudiate interpretations of his recent comments that his Christian followers would not have to vote again after 2024 because he was going to “fix” things, Trump was wrong but offered no concrete guarantees:

Hugh Thompson was an Army helicopter pilot who, with the two members of his team, intervened to prevent the bloodbath, hitting his helicopter between Vietnamese civilians and advancing U. S. troops. He was able to rescue some civilians and reported the bloodbath to the chain of command, which eventually led to the closure of the operation. He later testified at Calley’s court-martial.
After his military career ended, Thompson ended up living for a time in my hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, flying helicopters for the offshore oil and fuel industry. It was not until the 1990s, on the 30th anniversary of the massacre, that Thompson was identified for his exemplary conduct on that dark day in the history of the US military. He died of cancer in 2006 at the age of 62.

CNN reports how the MAGA 6 judges gave Trump absolute force in an effort to hijack his criminal trials. As the dissident pointed out, MAGA 6 declared that a president is immune from the law if he sells pardons, attempts (or succeeds) a coup d’état, and has his political rivals assassinated. And what is not said in the resolution is that an anarchic president can assassinate judges who resist. Exactly. Kill them.
