SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The California Coast Commission voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve the city of San Diego’s request to convert Point Loma Fire Station H into a safe parking lot for other homeless people.
The demolition of the barracks has already begun and the city has begun to examine the possibility of the assets allowing other people to sleep in their cars. The city says other people would have access to the land, which is said to have 190 squares. to facilities and showers for the homeless.
However, some Point Loma residents opposed the project. Members of Point Loma Cares spoke at the Coastal Commission meeting with their thoughts on the project.
His court cases on safe parking focus on protecting community residents, noise pollutants for the homeless at the nearby San Diego airport, and the duration of benefits if the city were to turn the parking lot into a shelter.
In its plan presented to the Commission, the city of San Diego defined a second phase of the project, which would turn the assets into a shelter for six hundred people. The city told coastal commissioners Wednesday that it had hired a third party to remove asbestos and lead from the assets.
Several other people opposed the allocation in public comments Wednesday night, arguing that the city had been misleading in sharing the second segment.
According to the city, the assets will be converted into a natural water facility in five years, though it plans to use the land in the meantime.
City Council President Sean Elo Rivera said he supports the plan and disagrees with the decision of some residents to fight the project.
“The idea of other people spending money to oppose a situation where they can just sleep in their car at night?It bothers me a lot. I’ll be honest. I think we can do more than that. “he said.
ABC 10News contacted members of the neighboring opposition organization who refrained from speaking while the Coastal Commission was still discussing the plan.
The city said the secure parking could be ready early next year.
