Trump was found guilty of 34 counts in the Hush-Money case. What happens now?

Snopes verified the presidential debate live!

On May 30, 2024, a New York jury found former U. S. President Donald Trump guilty of 34 counts of tampering with records. He is the first U. S. president convicted of a crime.

All the major media outlets covered the story with other tactics and answered other questions about the verdict. To get more facts about the case, NPR policy presented the arguments presented by the prosecution and defense.

But many other people need to know what will happen next. Below is a summary of the main points:

Although Trump has been found guilty, he has not yet been convicted. Judge Juan Merchan has scheduled Trump’s sentencing hearing for July 11. It is at this hearing that the sanctions will be decided, adding a criminal penalty imaginable. Trump is expected to appeal the decision, which could also delay the start date of his sanction, whatever it may be, until after the November presidential election.

NBC and CBS spoke with experts who believed Trump most likely wouldn’t be sentenced to prison for many reasons. Trump is the Republican candidate who will face incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden.

Trump is still eligible to run for president and hold that office — nothing in the U.S. Constitution prevents him from doing so. As reported by Politico, he is far from the first criminal to run for the office. He could also theoretically lose his right to vote, as reported by CNN, however, this is unlikely, since it would require him to receive prison time.

According to an ABC News investigation, this conviction is unlikely to particularly replace public opinion. The election is still five months away, which is an incredibly long era in politics: The ABC article notes that the famous Access Hollywood tape, in which Trump brazenly talks about himself groping and sexually assaulting women, aired approx. a month before the 2016 presidential election. elections, and Trump temporarily regained everything he had lost.
