A Russia-affiliated disinformation network known as Doppelganger has posted an anti-Biden video on X, made with generative AI, according to a report via WIRED.
The video, titled “Bye Bye Biden,” parodies U. S. President Joe Biden and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. An actor played the role of the two candidates for the 2024 presidential elections, whose features were drawn to resemble those of AI.
Biden has been portrayed as a senile old man who uses a wheelchair, wears diapers and doesn’t know how to ride a bike. The video also shows him as a corrupt politician and repeated false accusations from the 2020 election involving Trump’s vote theft.
The video reached 6. 5 million users and was viewed by five million, according to research by Antibot4Navalny, an organization of Russian researchers. Following the campaign, the organization discovered that 4,000 posts had been published to advertise the video as of May 21, a network of 25,000 accounts on X.
The organization also discovered a new strategy to overcome social media surveillance. The disinformation network cut and edited the video so that it can simply advertise videos that “are technically other in milliseconds” and that “will likely be exclusive and distinct videos through abuse coverage systems. “”
Another organization, True Media, a U. S. nonprofit that works to find deep political fakes, said with 100 percent confidence that the video was made with AI-generated audio and 78 percent confidence that the AI is facing the manipulation used for the video, WIRED said. .
“As the Kremlin intensifies its efforts to undermine the November U. S. election, it is clear that Russia is willing to use emerging AI technologies,” WIRED writes. The publication also mentions its previous report on the “CopyCop” campaign, which used AI equipment. to gather data and insights from genuine news sites, which are then repurposed to advertise a right-wing bias, published through a network of fake sites.
This series of additional reports illustrates the strength of generative AI teams in facilitating the creation of potentially persuasive and far-reaching harmful propaganda or news.
In April, the Philippine government had to heed a warning about fake audio ordering a military strike. Earlier this year, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s campaign used artificial intelligence equipment to create a cute animated edition of himself, which experts say played a major role in softening the army’s strongman symbol.
