Transportation planners have a new concept for how to address traffic congestion as Dallas-Fort Worth’s population grows: more autonomous cable cars that riders can call when requested.
Five North Texas cities — Dallas, Arlington, Plano, Frisco and DeSoto — are fighting to become the first in the U. S. to test the new transportation formula known as Whoosh. The formula is made up of electric cars that still look like traditional aerial gondolas. use autonomous generation to run a larger network of cables and continuous rails. The concept comes from Swyft Cities, a project born at Google but now an independent company aimed at innovating in public transport.
The company has been working with the North Central Texas Council of Governments to identify potential sites. Swyft Cities will be the one that best suits the first execution of the project.
North Texas is one of the fastest-developing regions in the country, with more than one million people developing every seven years. The NCTCOG expects there to be more particularly congested corridors until 2045. Planners say that means they want to think beyond expanding roads.

“We have between 8 and 12 million people lately, [so] we’re going to want other possible transportation options because our roads are going to get more congested,” said Brendon Wheeler, NCTCOG program director.
Like buses, Whoosh cars would have predetermined ground stops, and the formula would first cover a radius of about 3 miles; More stops may be added later. But unlike buses or trains, the on-demand nature means they would bypass all existing stops to take passengers directly to the one they’ve designated. Being elevated, it also avoids road traffic instead of competing with it.
While the potential site has unique needs, Whoosh is a great choice for medium-density spaces, such as the edges of a city center, places that lack smart last-mile transit options.
“Downtown is probably pretty well connected through other modes of transportation, but there are a lot of places outside of downtown Dallas and Fort Worth that don’t have smart solutions,” said Jeral Poskey, CEO of Swyft Cities.
Swyft Cities chose North Texas because of an NCTCOG program that seeks to bring new transit technologies into the domain and link them to local governments. The transportation plan firm first reviews companies, making sure they offer potential answers to some of DFW’s transportation problems. Challenges.
While the charge will depend on the specifications of each formula, the construction of a Whoosh formula is expected to cost between $30 million and $50 million. Cities are in the process of applying for grants. These will materialize on the same date next year, as will the formula plans.
Having them on hand will allow Swyft Cities to know where to check the first system.
“The basic criterion will be where is the position where we can make the biggest effect temporarily in Dallas Fort Worth?” says Poskey.
