According to the General Directorate for the Coordination of the Treatment of Prisoners of War, at least one third of returnees suffer injuries, serious illnesses or disabilities. Ukrainians from Kharkiv, Kyiv, Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhya and Sumy oblasts have been repatriated and healthy.
Today’s prisoner swap, the 52nd since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, was facilitated by the United Arab Emirates.
Dmytro Lubinets, Commissioner for Human Rights of Ukraine, indicated that officials of the Ombudsman were present at the exchange site to ensure that all procedures were in accordance with foreign humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.
To date, 3,210 Ukrainians have been released from Russian captivity.
Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange
The latest prisoner exchange took place on February 8, when Ukraine returned National Guard soldiers, 25 border guards, 26 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and 11 terrorists.
Earlier, on January 3, the largest exchange since the start of the Russian invasion took place. Ukraine has repatriated 230 citizens, totaling 213 infantrymen and sergeants, 11 officers and six civilians. Among them were the defenders of Azovstal.
May 20 marked the anniversary of the Russian detention of 1,900 Azovstal defenders.
