Sports Illustrated and Maven have fired several editors from their channel sites, bringing up COVID-19.

There’s been a lot of discussion recently about TheMaven’s Sports Illustrated operation, from lawsuits over unpaid transition fees to how to deal with problematic hires and tell workers they deserve to set up discarded accounts to start “community” conversations. The newest factor saw several team editors. and the site’s editors tweeted this week that they had been laid off due to factors of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this comes months after Maven announced six percent layoffs at SI in March (in addition to the above). October, at Maven’s behest). Here are some of the tweets, starting with Chase Howell, editor and writer for the Colorado Buffaloes:

Here’s Virginia Tech editor and writer Mike McDaniel:

I need to thank @SInow for this opportunity and I need to send my sincere thanks to my amazing team. @BestCates @AndrewAlixRadio @RickyLaBlue @BryanDManning @ryanhartman44 @HereGoJayAgain and @Severus_Snipes

Possibly there would be others; They’re just the ones we’ve seen. Tweet us at @AndrewBucholtz or @awfulannunciando if any are missing.

Update: Howard Megdal, who ran the SI/Maven Knicks website, also tweeted about his departure. However, he did not mention that this was attributed to COVID-19:

And AA also learned that David Visser, who ran the SI/Maven Florida State site, had been fired. However, he tweeted about it.

It’s remarkable to see Maven make additional cuts to his teams’ sites. And, interestingly, many of them are in ACC schools, and the convention is still making plans to play football this fall. And it’s also worth noting that this happened at the same time. that one of Maven’s authors announced the launch of a Syracuse (also ACC) site:

That day is TODAY HUI. @SyracuseOnSI is now LIVE with full coverage!https://t. co/U8TduQV8iS

– John Garcia, Jr. (@JohnGarcia_Jr) August 20, 2020

Garcia Jr. had been in the past at SI/Maven as “director of football scouting” and a key contributor to their SI All-American Football site, so this announcement doesn’t imply that they are hiring anyone new, as they are removing others. ; It turns out that this is more of a redistribution of their responsibilities. But it’s appealing to see SI launch another school site at a time when it turns out it’s moving away from some it already had. And indeed, it turns out that it’s surprising to see Maven making additional cuts right now and chalking them up to COVID-19.
