The Burney Group has a building to build a Travelodge and a Starbucks
A beachfront plot of land in Skegness is being sold for a pound to build a new Travelodge and Starbucks.
The former South Parade mini-golf course is said to have a market price of around £280,000.
East Lindsey borough council said it had agreed to sell it for just one pound so developers can start painting “within a few months”.
According to Councilman Steve Kirk, the land had been “underutilized for many years” and the sale would result in the creation of tasks and investments.
The South Parade box has not been used since 2018
In January 2023, The Burney Group received permission to make plans to build a six-story, 80-bed Travelodge hotel and a Starbucks drive-thru that has been empty since 2018.
Cllr Kirk said the council sold the land at a low price because the cost of building there is high as it is “low” and would require a “substantial” foundation.
He described the sale as “a win-win” that would generate 30 full-time jobs and around £130,000 a year on a pro-rata recommendation “to be spent on citizens and what they value”.
“The monthly search volume on Google is 3,600 searches for the Travelodge Skegness, so we know it will work well when it gets here,” he added.
The owner of the guesthouse, Joanne Veseli, worries that hoteliers are wasting their business
Premier Inn opened a hotel on beachfront grounds in Skegness in April 2019.
Joanne Veseli, owner of Philmar Guest House in Skegness, said she was “very angry” about the sale.
“It’s taking business away from us hoteliers,” he said.
“We don’t want a national channel.
“When the Premier Inn arrived, I didn’t think it would affect me or the B’s.
