A recent incident involving an Ontario resident and a U. S. -based car rental company has highlighted current issues with cross-border insurance coverage.
In an interview with CTV News Toronto, Cynthia Pullano said she had to pay more than $900 because of the company’s Canadian insurance rules.
Pullano rented a car from Priceless Car Rental when he was in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, last January. Their original reservation estimated a week’s rent at $372. However, he later reported that he also had to pay for insurance and that his Canadian car insurance policy would not be accepted.
In total, Pullano had to pay another $562 to cover insurance expenses and tolls.
And when asked about the extra cost, Pullano said the user he spoke to about renting said they “don’t settle for Canadian insurance anymore. “
Priceless Car Rental, when asked for comment, said the resolution no longer settled for Canadian insurance exclusive to its Fort Lauderdale location and due to issues with previous claim denials.
The company’s spokesperson also clarified that data on its regulations regarding Canadian insurance can be found on its website, as well as on the booking site used through Pullano.
CTV showed that Priceless Car Rental’s Fort Lauderdale explicitly states its policy of not accepting Canadian insurance.
Doing an analysis of the situation, Anne Marie Thomas of the Insurance Office of Canada (IBC) said Canadian policies make the policy broader for rentals in the United States.
But Thomas also noted that he reserves the right to refuse foreign insurance.
“I assume a company has the option of not accepting your coverage, but my recommendation would be to consult a rental car company,” he told CTV News.
