Work to widen the junction road, which connects junction 19 of the M62 to the South Heywood distribution park, was completed this week.

The new link road, which opened in November 2022, created for the first time directly from the M62 to the region’s main employment sites.

The widening involves the widening and resurfacing of a 650-metre stretch of Pilsworth Road to its junction with Moss Hall Road.

The existing pedestrian path on the north side was rebuilt and widened, and a new three-meter-long common walking and biking trail was created for the first time on the south side.

The task builds on the creation of Junction Link Road 19, called Queen Elizabeth Way, which has attracted more than £20 million in external investment and will create 135,000 square metres of employment space, 1,000 new homes and a world-class school as a component of the first phase of the Northern Gateway allocation.

The new expansion will provide additional access to the Northern Gateway, which has the potential to create 1. 2 million square metres of new employment space.

It is also estimated that the link road has diverted some 50,000 HGV journeys from Heywood, the town centre and the village of Hopwood since it opened just 18 months ago.

In addition, it included the creation of new routes for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as new safer pedestrian crossings at the roundabout at junction 19.

Reflecting on the benefits of the new link road and its extension, Glyn Hawkins, Director of Transport at QuickShift Transport, founded in Heywood Distribution Park, said: “Since the opening of the link road, our drivers have had to face a long, worrying journey travelling across Simister Island on the M66. This reduces each of them by about 8 kilometers, saving fuel, which is especially beneficial for our trucks and the environment.

“The new link road also does a wonderful job by reducing traffic from Heywood town centre and saving many additional kilometres for the cars in the distribution fleet.

“Now that the new motorcycle lanes are open, we look forward to introducing motorcycles in paint systems for our staff. “

The expansion project, carried out through Greater Manchester-based George Cox and Sons, includes the structure of a new centre leading directly to a potential new employment site opposite the Heywood distribution centre. Improved drainage and lighting along the direction were also incorporated as a component of the project.

In addition, the new cycle lane will be linked to a cycle lane, creating a continuous lane from junction 19 of the M62 to exit 3 of the M66.

Councillor Shah Wazir, Rochdale City Council’s Roads Cabinet Member, said: “The link road has been a revolutionary development, which will open up huge opportunities in this vital component of our district. I’m excited to see this expansion is now complete, as it will allow us to take advantage of those benefits and create even more. This will be vital as we move forward with the Atom Valley project, which will create opportunities for thousands of high-skilled, high-paying jobs in Rochdale, Bury. and Oldham.
