Bimbo Bakeries USA, Inc. has introduced its on-site microgrid formula at six California bakeries.
The formula was developed as part of an energy agreement with GreenStruxure, which designed and built microgrids consisting of solar panels along with battery storage.
These six microgrid systems supply approximately 20% of Bimbo Bakeries USA’s energy consumption and save the company approximately 1,700 tons of CO2 per year. GreenStruxure, which constantly protects and maintains the system, provides Bimbo Bakeries USA with full transparency into its portfolio functionality through its virtual platform, which aggregates zero-carbon energy, peak demand management, and optimized energy usage from the grid and its on-site system.
“It is our duty as a member of Grupo Bimbo, the world’s largest bakery company, to be a leader in sustainability,” says Chris Wolfe, Senior Director of Environmental Sustainability at Bimbo Bakeries USA. “Our purpose is to care for and maintain the planet. Microgrid systems at those six bakeries are another step toward reducing our overall carbon footprint.
The six California bakeries (Montebello, Placentia, Oxnard, San Luis Obispo, South San Francisco, and Sacramento) were selected based on their energy intensity, electric power costs from emerging applications, and their impact on decarbonization. Corporations are also operating at other sites for long-term implementation.
“Our new microgrid systems will contribute to California’s efforts to expand the use of renewable energy in the state,” says Kevin Yavari, senior director of sustainability at Bimbo Bakeries USA. “We’re on the state’s blank energy project and we’ll continue to look at tactics for those efforts. “
To recognize this momentous moment in the company’s sustainability commitments, Bimbo Bakeries USA hosted a rite of dedication at Montebello Bakery, home to the largest of the six microgrids.
