U. S. Sen. Joe Manchin’s Wife Hospitalized After Car Accident

Gayle Manchin and one of her colleagues, Guy Land, were injured in the crash that occurred in Birmingham on Monday (Jan. 29) while traveling from Birmingham International Airport to an area hotel.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. >> U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin’s wife and a colleague of hers have both been hospitalized following a car crash in Alabama.

Gayle Manchin, 76, and Guy Land were injured Monday in the crash in Birmingham while en route from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport to a hotel in the area, Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, said Tuesday.

“On Monday, my wife Gayle and her colleague Guy Land were involved in a car accident while traveling from the airport to the hotel in Birmingham, Alabama, for an Appalachian Regional Commission event scheduled for today,” the senator said.

“Both have been admitted to the UAB Hospital and are receiving care. She remains in good condition but will remain there for a few days as a precaution. We would like to thank the first responders who responded to the call and were the first to arrive at the scene. to provide assistance and support.

Gayle Manchin is the federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission and is in Birmingham with Land, the CRA’s congressional liaison, for a grant workshop.

ARC said in a statement that another vehicle crashed into its car on its way to the event. Land’s injuries were not disclosed, but the commission said he and Manchin “receive the proper car at a UAB facility while they recover. “

A phone call to Birmingham police seeking details of the crash was answered on Tuesday.

Manchin served as governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010, when he was elected to the Senate. The couple has been married since 1967 and has 3 children.

Gayle Manchin, a former educator, served as president of the West Virginia Board of Education and secretary of state for education and the arts under Republican Gov. Jim Justice. She was sworn in as the 13th federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission in 2021 after being appointed by President Joe Biden.
