Two MedStar Health Hospitals Earn Prestigious Nurse Magnet Designation® for the First Time

COLUMBIA, Md. , Jan. 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — MedStar Harbor Hospital and MedStar Medical Center joined an exclusive organization of national hospitals last week when the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program Commission announced that all hospitals have earned the Magnet®® designation for nursing excellence. This is the highest and most prestigious honor a healthcare organization can earn in the United States. Less than ten percent of the nation’s hospitals have achieved the Magnet designation.

MedStar Harbor and MedStar Montgomery, along with MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center (fourth designation) are 3 of 8 Maryland hospitals with Magnet recognition. In addition to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (fifth designation, with only two Magnet hospitals in Washington D. C. ), MedStar Health now has 4 hospitals with the Magnet designation.

The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes organizations that meet rigorous criteria for patient care, teamwork, professionalism, and innovation of the highest quality in nursing practice. Achieving Magnet’s prestige requires extensive documentation, a comprehensive assessment, and a thorough site visit. As a benchmark for Excellence in Nursing, the Magnet popularity is awarded to an organization for a four-year term and the organization will need to reapply for the designation.
