Solvay S. A. (Brussels, Belgium) continues to expand hydrogen production capacity at its Shandong Huatai Interox Chemical in China. Building on its existing partnership with Huatai Chemical, the strategic alliance will enable it to produce 48,000 tonnes of photovoltaic-grade hydrogen consistent with the year to 2025. This strategic investment not only strengthens Solvay’s leadership in the global market, but also positions it to meet the developing demand of the photovoltaic industry well, thereby supporting the expansion of the renewable energy sector in northern China.
“In alignment with China’s ambitious carbon neutrality targets, our collaboration positions Solvay as a key contributor. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies and building on our established presence in the high-purity hydrogen peroxide market, this strategic partnership capitalizes on the rapid expansion of China’s photovoltaic market,” said Philippe Kehren, Solvay CEO. “This project highlights our commitment to sustainability and strengthens our capability to secure a more significant share of the thriving Chinese market, further enhancing our well-established industrial presence in the region.”
Since 2010, Solvay and Huatai have effectively operated an innovative joint venture incorporating Solvay’s hydrogen peroxide technology. Located in the Dongying Technical and Economic Development Zone of Shandong Province, the plant strategically positions Solvay at the center of China’s dynamic hydrogen peroxide market, which is identified as the largest in the world.
