Car windows were broken at a retirement home, it is known if they are similar to the past vandalism of a vehicle

ASHEVILLE, N. C. (WLOS) — A series of damaged car windows at a South Asheville retiree network has citizens on edge.

“We are very disappointed in this situation,” said Teresa Stephens, vice president of Givens Affordable Communities. “We are now collaborating with our citizens to mitigate those issues. “

The vandalisms happened overnight Wednesday, according to a Givens Gerber Park resident who did not want to reveal her identity.

“I’d like to see a lot of security cameras,” the resident said. “I know security guards and everything else is expensive, we’d like to see more security cameras. “

“We have cameras in some areas, but they haven’t proven to be very useful in solving crimes like this,” Stephens said.

Stephens said nine car windows were bashed in. The Asheville Police Department has not confirmed the total number yet or if this series of window breaks is related to the more than 100 vehicles that were vandalized in Asheville last month.

Stephens said Givens Gerber Park helped citizens record police reports.

“Sometimes all we have is a car, you know?” the resident said. “We don’t have money to buy a car. Installing windows is expensive, and some other people don’t have insurance. A girl will have to wait two weeks to have hers repaired and bad weather arrives.

The assets provide tax credits and subsidized apartments through the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Then, according to Stephens, money for safety innovations would have to be approved through agencies, HUD added.

“This is low- to moderate-income senior housing, and there’s simply no budget for the kind of on-site security on the night that we’d like to solve a challenge like this,” Stephens said. “Actually, it scares us. “
