The start-up news platform The Messenger denied on Wednesday the “absurd” notion that it reportedly has no money and could shut down. This comes after the site laid off nearly two dozen of its employee staff this week across all departments in an effort to cut costs amid a second round of fundraising, TheWrap learned.
“We have already secured investments as part of our second raise, so the idea that we are discussing the shutdown is beyond absurd,” a spokesperson for The Messenger told TheWrap after a Wednesday report via Semafor journalist Max Tani.
“New from me: The Messenger is running out of money, and discussed at a board meeting last Friday the possibility of shutting down altogether. Founder Jimmy Finkelstein has also privately expressed a willingness to sell the news org,” Tani wrote in an X post on Wednesday.
