This morning, rescue groups began searching for a way to cope in remote spaces where buildings have been toppled, roads destroyed and power has been cut off to tens of thousands of homes.
The quake, with an initial magnitude of 7. 6, struck on Monday afternoon, sending citizens in some coastal areas fleeing to upper floors as tsunami waves battered Japan’s western coast, sweeping cars and homes into the sea.
A rescue team of 3,000 people, as well as military, fire and police personnel from across the country, was dispatched to the quake site on the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture.
Many railways and flights to the region have been suspended. Noto airport was closed due to damage to its runway, terminal and access roads, and another 500 people were trapped in cars in its parking lot, public broadcaster NHK reported.
