Death toll from China’s Qinghai earthquake rises to 34

(MENAFN-IANS) BEIJING, Jan 1 (IANS) The death toll from the magnitude 6. 2 earthquake that struck northwest China a few weeks ago has risen to 34 in Qinghai province, according to the earthquake relief center.

By Sunday morning, the last two of the other 20 people missing in the city of Haidong had been found still without any major signs, bringing the death toll to 34, the headquarters said at a news conference on Sunday.

As relief efforts come to an end, the focus is now on post-earthquake reconstruction, he added.

As of Sunday, the Qinghai government had built 3,507 prefabricated houses, in which more than 16,000 citizens were affected, the Xinhua news firm reported.

Meanwhile, more than 7,000 people living in mountainous areas that are not suitable for the construction of prefabricated houses live in cotton-padded tents.

At the resettlement in Guanxi Village, Minhe County of Haidong, villager Zhang Zhiguo said there are more than 140 prefabricated houses lately and the village has distributed rice, flour, oil, charcoal and other supplies.

The village of Kexinmin in Jishishan County, in neighbouring Gansu province, is planning various activities for the first day of 2024, including basketball games and group psychological counselling, to help residents deal with the psychological trauma and to boost their confidence in rebuilding homes.

Jishishan County is the epicenter of the earthquake that killed more than one person.
