An alert has been issued for Seychelles after an explosion at the site of a structure and flooding triggered the state of emergency.
At least 100 casualties were reported as a result of the explosion in the Providence Industrial Zone, the impact of which was also felt at the airport.
The incident was compounded by flooding caused by torrential rains in the northern region of Mahé.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned in an updated statement: “Due to heavy rains and a commercial turnaround that occurred on the night of December 6, a state of emergency was declared on December 7.
“If you are in the Seychelles, on the island of Mahé, you are kindly requested not to leave your accommodation until further notice.
“Flights to and from the country continue to operate and visitors arriving or departing can do so to and from the airport.
“Swimming in the sea in the north east of the island of Mahé is currently not advised due to an overflow of the sewage system caused by heavy rains.
“We must adhere to the recommendations of the local government as the scenario evolves.
“Inter-island public transport operates daily. If you intend to travel between islands, it is worth checking the schedules of the ferries and airlines involved.
