Donald Trump is unhappy with Jimmy Kimmel and has asked the late-night host to apologize for a comment he made on an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
Kimmel doesn’t hold back when it comes to Trump, and in recent weeks, the 56-year-old has mocked the former president’s “very stupid crime family,” brutally attacked Hitler and gutted his court appearances.
On Thursday night’s episode of his show, Kimmel revealed that he had won a letter from Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), the organization that runs Trump’s social media site, Truth Social. He asked the presenter to retract a comment he made about the platform. on Tuesday’s show.
On air, the comic said that Truth Social has lost $73 million since its release. However, once he and his team went back and reviewed TMTG’s case with the SEC, it turned out that the company had “only” lost $31. 6 million.
“This morning, I woke up to a not-so-easy letter from the Trump Media and Technology Group in which I apologize and retract one I made on-air about their embattled social media platform, Truth Social,” Kimmel said Thursday night.
The letter demanded that ABC “completely remove all versions of the segment” and “issue a mutually appropriate apology . . . acknowledging that the segment was false and retracted. . . Unless those steps are taken immediately, TMTG will swiftly take legal action to enforce its rights and reputation. “
The letter also claimed that the exhibit had “knowingly or recklessly” misrepresented data related to Truth Social’s monetary situation.
Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, told Newsweek: “Who still watches Jimmy Kimmel? He’s still reeling from doing blackface on TV.”
Newsweek reached out to a representative for Kimmel to email him with his comments on Friday.
Kimmel said during Thursday’s program: “We talk a lot about Donald Trump here at the show in the same way paleontologists talk about apes, right? We’re studying him but it’s easy to forget sometimes that he actually sees this stuff.
“He is obsessed with himself and what other people say about him and because of that, we once again find ourselves in the crosshairs of our crazy former president and his compatriots. “
The late-night host went on to explain that he and his team at the late-night comedy show go to great lengths to “present accurate information” and have a rigorous fact-checking procedure in place.
Kimmel assured viewers that prior to the broadcast of Tuesday’s episode, several credible sources were reporting Truth Social had lost $73 million, which eventually turned out to be incorrect.
“In other words [and] in all honesty, Truth Social is not a colossal failure, it’s simply a catastrophic failure,” Kimmel said. “And I’d like to do the right thing and congratulate our former president of Balloon Animal and his company for wasting just $31. 6 million. That’s pretty smart for you, it’s one of your most productive features to date. “
Kimmel has missed the irony of the stage, as Trump is embroiled in a number of ongoing legal issues. These include a $250 million civil trial for bank fraud in New York and 91 felon fees in separate cases.
“I have to say that demanding a retraction for incorrectly pricing his business is pretty funny considering the fact that lately he’s being put on trial for incorrectly pricing his business,” Kimmel said. “Maybe he’ll sue himself.
“But in all honesty, TMTG demanded an apology, so from the bottom of my heart, I need to say to Donald Trump and everyone at TMTG: I guess I’m deeply sorry that you’re so bad at running companies, but no. ” Doesn’t this guy have more important things to worry about?
