Amazon will allow U. S. consumers to buy cars at their local dealerships starting next year.

Do you need to buy a car on Amazon? Well, now you have your chance.

The e-commerce giant will unveil U. S. vehicle sales next year and allow local car dealerships to sell to consumers on its site.

In a joint announcement with automaker Hyundai on Thursday, the two corporations said Amazon would begin providing Hyundai cars. In turn, Hyundai will call Amazon’s cloud computing unit AWS as its cloud provider and integrate its next-generation cars with Alexa. Amazon’s popular voice assistant.

The idea, according to Amazon, is to allow consumers to buy a new car online and pick it up (or have it delivered) at their local dealership.

Amazon did not say how many resellers would participate in the program or whether consumers in the U. S. would make purchases. An Amazon spokesperson said the company will release more details as it develops the program, which is expected to start with Hyundai’s franchised dealers and launch later next year.

Currently, Amazon sells automotive gadgets online and offers a showroom for consumers who need to study other types of cars they might need to buy, but consumers can’t buy a vehicle directly on its platform.

However, Thursday’s announcement shows Amazon’s ambitions to strengthen its presence through resellers in a sector that has strong lobbying forces and strong state regulations. Almost all states require brands to sell their cars through brokers so that automakers don’t compromise their own network of franchised brokers. .

Despite its vision, Amazon might find it difficult to convince consumers who aren’t comfortable making such a mammoth purchase on its platform. In a statement, an Amazon spokesperson said consumers are buying cars online and that the company will provide a “range of answers. “that add transparency” to the car buying process to help them make an informed decision.
