The expanded collaboration with Vanguard Renewables aims to significantly increase the productivity of renewable natural gas production in the U. S. U. S.
More efficient production would aim to increase the parity of renewable plant fuels and advance the transition to blank energy.
WILMINGTON, Delaware, Nov. 8, 2023–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AstraZeneca (AZN) is leveraging its global, industrial-scale production and virtual capabilities to boost renewable herbal fuel (RNG) productivity in the U. S. With the ambition to multiply productivity by several times, the collaboration aims to increase parity with plant-based fuel produced from fossil fuels.
Leveraging AstraZeneca’s global manufacturing, supply chain, and virtual and clinical expertise, the corporations plan to work together to increase RNG throughput and drive a radical improvement in RNG production. Technological innovations and increased production can increase the profitability of RNG, an existing barrier to the widespread deployment of renewables. The collaboration also aims to add RNG capacity to the U. S. power grid. It is important to build capacity for sustainable innovation for the broader public benefit.
Pam Cheng, Executive Vice President, Global Operations & IT and Chief Sustainability Officer, AstraZeneca, said: “The truth is that the adoption of new energy resources presents many challenging scenarios and ambitious actions are needed if we are to succeed in transitioning to green energy. Our collaboration with Vanguard Renewables is a vital step in our journey towards net-zero by driving deep decarbonization, not only in AstraZeneca’s own operations, but across the healthcare sector and beyond. “
Starting with three priority areas, the collaboration will seek capacity and design improvements for Vanguard Renewables’ Farm Powered® procedure through state-of-the-art controls and chemistry to produce RNG faster by employing on-farm anaerobic digestion (AD) from feed and agricultural waste; it also intends to extend virtual twins for the AD procedure to enable immediate experimentation and modeling, adding prospective integration of synthetic intelligence (AI); and third, it aims to strengthen the supply chain to scale production and sourcing.
Neil H. Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Vanguard Renewables, said: “As our partnership with AstraZeneca continues to grow, this cross-collaboration will help us achieve our shared project of charting a path to net zero. “
This announcement builds on the industry’s first collaboration announced in June between AstraZeneca and Vanguard Renewables to ship RNGs to all AstraZeneca studies and production sites in the U. S. and Canada. until the end of 2026.
This planned collaboration contributes to the commitments made under AstraZeneca’s flagship Zero Carbon Ambition strategy for the decarbonisation of the price chain and is an ambitious step in the company’s efforts to drive the broader decarbonisation of the healthcare sector. (GHG) of its global operations (Scopes 1 and 2) by up to 98% between 2026 and 2015, and by 2030, AstraZeneca aims to halve its entire price chain footprint and be on track. 2045 at the latest.
Remarks:
Anaerobic digestion
Non-edible or non-saleable food and beverages from the production and retail sectors are collected, sorted, unpacked on site and combined with dairy farm manure in a sealed biodigester tank. Once combined in the biodigester, the microorganisms provide herbs in the manure to digest the tea, transforming sugars, fats and other compounds into biofuel. Harnessing the strength of tea can capture up to 95% of the potential greenhouse fuel emissions that would be produced if food and beverages were sent to a landfill or agricultural manure was spread on land. floor. The procedure produces GNR that is transformed into pipeline-grade fuel and injected on-site into the existing pipeline infrastructure, replacing classic fossil fuels. The biofuel is then used for heating and cooling or can be used to produce compressed vegetable fuel (CNG) for vehicles. The byproducts of the anaerobic digestion procedure come with a nutrient-rich, low-carbon fertilizer (digestate) that reduces the farm’s dependence on chemical fertilizers, and a dry byproduct that is used as animal bedding. When food and beverage brands ship their organic tea to a farm-powered site and acquire the RNG created through their tea to power their factories, they create a closed-loop solution that helps address Scope 1 emissions and 3 in their business practices.
