WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Donald Trump State Department politician who attempted to storm the Capitol and assaulted law enforcement officials on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced Friday to 70 months in prison.

Federico Klein was arrested in March 2021 and convicted of eight felonies and misdemeanors by U. S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, also a Trump appointee, in July 2023 following a court trial.

Klein did not speak at his sentencing hearing and declined to comment after the hearing when asked by NBC News if he continued until the election was stolen from him and if he regretted his moves that day.

McFadden called Klein’s conduct “shocking and egregious” and warned that his sentence would have been harsher if Klein had not already been under space arrest for two years. Klein, McFadden said, had “intent on breaking into the building” and said he was “stunned. “” through Klein’s habit on Jan. 6.

“This is a government of laws, not of men,” McFadden said, adding that Klein seemed determined to overturn that maxim. McFadden said he saw no evidence that Klein felt remorse.

The government had asked for 10 years in federal prison for Klein, saying he “was likely motivated by personal gain, i. e. , maintaining a role as a political figure, when he attacked the U. S. Capitol. “He had sent before January 6: “Damn, yes, I’m going. I’m nominated through Trump,” as well as the fact that he “took time off from his duty at the State Department to volunteer in Las Vegas. “to investigate the Trump campaign’s false claims of major voter fraud.

“You can’t help this!” Klein shouted one of the attacks in the lower west tunnel of the U. S. Capitol, which was the site of some of the worst acts of violence of the attack. At one point, prosecutors said, Klein “placed a police insurrection shield between the doors, helping to force the doors open and allow the insurrectionists to continue their attacks on police. “

McFadden imposed the sentence following a sentencing hearing on Friday. Klein represented through attorney Stanley Woodward, who represents several Trump aides involved in federal investigations into the former president.

Woodward said at the sentencing hearing that the government became more involved in “publicity” of the case. He noted that prosecutors noted that Klein, the president’s first designated user, was arrested in the attack and that they cited his paintings for Trump’s administration when they asked for pretrial detention. Woodward noted that Klein had not made “a single public statement” about the case from the beginning, unlike other rioters.

Woodward said that while he and Klein “disagree on a lot of issues, political, environmental and otherwise,” they have been able to have civil conversations about the issues and that Klein knows the ballot box is the place where the nation’s disagreements will have to be resolved. .

“We don’t want a 10-year sentence against Mr. Klein to deter the general public,” Woodward argued. He’s a man replaced. “

More than 1,100 more people were arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the U. S. Capitol, and more than 400 were sentenced to criminal penalties. The longest criminal sentence handed down so far was imposed on former Proud Boys president Enrique Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison.
