MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Jacob Frey have agreed to a new location for a police station to upgrade the one he looted and installed in reaction to the killing of George Floyd by a city police officer.
The council voted 8-5 Thursday to approve a new station in the third sector, a few blocks from the previous location, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. The city will spend $14 million to purchase an existing building and parking lot and turn it into a new exercise. station, which is expected to be completed in a year and a half.
“It’s a huge victory for our city, but also for the citizens of the third district, who are asking for safety,” Frey said after the vote. “Obviously, we wanted it to be as soon as possible. “

Council members also voted 12-0 to approve a solution that would commit the city to eventually creating a “community protection center” at the site. The center is expected to have a space beyond classic policing, such as behavioral and intellectual fitness crisis sets.
This additional commitment helped tip the scales in favor of the new site. There are no plans yet for the facility, but it is expected to charge an additional $7 million to $8. 5 million, the Star Tribune reported.
Council President Andrea Jenkins said the city continues to struggle with police and racial issues.
“Certainly, a construction didn’t cause the mess that we have,” Jenkins said. “It’s other people who are inside the construction. Therefore, this cannot be curative. . . This will be a first step into the future. “It’s not progress. We have to move on. “
Opponents said selling relative speed and economy is not a smart approach, given the legacy of Floyd’s killing through Derek Chauvin, a Third District police officer.
