Community Food Bank of Greater Pittsburgh Helps Families in Need This Thanksgiving

DUQUESNE, Pa. (KDKA) — The holiday season is just around the corner, and for many families, that means having to make some tough decisions. For some, they choose to pay for heating instead of food.

At the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank in Duquesne, new fruits, vegetables and other items are organized and packaged, so they can be sent to those who need them.

“It’s bringing the network together,” said Jordan Hartman, director of distribution for the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.

“At the food bank, we distributed 18% more products in this fiscal year that began in July compared to last year,” Hartman said.

But before the food reaches the table, they paint the refurbished warehouse a lot.

Improvements to the building come with an increased garage and accessibility. These are things that companies like UPMC have supported and that the food bank says it needs, especially as more and more families show up at the warehouse and the dozens of distribution sites they have each month. .

“We know that, sadly, other people have to make possible choices between food, utilities, physical care bills, many other assets in other people’s lives, and food; Unfortunately, other people think they might miss out. “

They were in McKeesport where they helped more than 450 families.

“We take eggs, vegetables, milk, frozen meats and some dry goods,” Hartman said.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, which serves 11 counties, extends beyond the city and the counties of Indiana, Somerset and Cambria.

“As we see a growing need, we will continue to need more networks within our organization to help our neighbors. “

Their goal, along with supporters like UPMC, is to make sure no one goes hungry during the upcoming holiday season and year.
