In its more than 20-year relationship with UnitedHealthcare, Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, Unified Government has strived to think big when it comes to the fitness and well-being of its workers and the network it serves.
The “UG” of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas has a lot of love for its workers and the wider network it serves. And it goes either way: its unionized, civilian, and sworn workers are committed to the UG and its network, with up to five generations of members of their family circle running for the UG.
“I think our painters are proud to paint here because it’s the network we serve,” says Renée Ramirez, UG’s director of human resources.
Serving a county consistently ranked as one of the least fit for the state of the state,1 the UG knew that the fitness and well-being of its network had to start from within.
Beginning in 2011, UG has leveraged its long-standing relationship with UnitedHealthcare to build a culture of fitness and wellness, also with the purpose of reducing fitness care costs.
In reviewing claims awareness and listening to workers over the first two years, two issues became clear: FU needed to make it less difficult for workers to manage their fitness and well-being, and it needed to provide them with more informed and cost-effective care. Decisions.
“The claims we paid were either because of how our workers were using the fitnesscare formula, or because the workers weren’t taking full advantage of the benefits we were providing them,” Ramirez says. “So we sought to make sure that our workers took ownership of their fitness by providing comfort and low fees. “
To increase the awareness and engagement of its employees, the UG has implemented a fitness and wellness program called “Path to Wellness. “While this program included working with UnitedHealthcare to distribute materials, host benefit fairs, and provide education on other benefits and programs. , the UG sought to go further.
In 2014, the UG began opening a fitness center for employees. Leveraging UnitedHealthcare’s strategic relationships with fitnesscare administrators, the UG enlisted help from internal control and purchased a 10,000-square-foot building that had been vacant in the network for several years. have become the headquarters of the Road to Wellness Employee Health Center.
“We wanted workers to understand that the decisions they make have a direct effect on their physical condition and that they are in control of their own physical condition and well-being,” Ramirez says.
Located two blocks from UG’s central campus, the Road to Wellness Employee Health Center includes a newly controlled and staffed on-site clinic through Marathon Health, where employees, spouses, and dependents have access to a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, and physician. . assistant. A-S Meds operates an on-site pharmacy to fill prescriptions for a fee and further encourage gym use.
In addition to offering the convenience workers seek, the clinic has also worked to close gaps in worker care and assistance to make more informed decisions that have resulted in better fitness outcomes and reduced costs.
Although the UG has had great luck with the Road to Wellness worker fitness center for several years, the team is thinking about what to do next.
For example, the UG recently added a fitness center funded through Wellness Dollars that can be obtained through UnitedHealthcare. “People come up to me and say, ‘Is that all for us?’Ramirez says, “They can’t. “
In recent years, the center has an integral component of UG’s fitness plan, and even its ability to retain generations of artists, and Ramirez and his team look forward to continuing to work with UnitedHealthcare and Marathon Health to drive a stronger engagement with the middle, with the ambition of increasing the number of painters hired at the center to 80%.
“Our Employee Health Center was a way to show that we take the well-being of our painters seriously. We value them and we need them to work here because the healthier they are, the better we can serve the citizens of Wyandotte County. ” says Ramirez.
