HomeGoods is the ultimate one-stop shop.
The home décor chain, owned by TJX Companies, sent an email to consumers on Wednesday announcing it would prevent online grocery shopping after Oct. 21.
“We have resolved our resources in our physical stores,” the email said, adding that it would announce “many new store openings. “
HomeGoods sells furniture, lamps, artwork, and other decorations at discounted prices. It is well known for the scavenger hunt experience in its stores.
TJX reported in August that e-commerce sales accounted for less than 2% of total sales in its last peak quarter.
“When it comes to e-commerce, in general, it’s only a very small percentage of our business,” John Joseph Klinger, TJX’s chief monetary officer, said on an earnings conference call in August. “We continue to upload new products to our sites so shoppers can see something new every time they visit. “
The high charge for shipping chairs and lamps to consumers may have been part of the reason the company decided to close HomeGoods. com.
A representative for TJX Companies showed the update in an email to Insider. They said it would only be the HomeGoods location and that the company had offered selected roles to all education associates. TJX also owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Sense, and Sierra.
A TJX visitor service representative told Insider that after Oct. 21, consumers will be able to use HomeGoods product gift cards and credits at other TJX-owned outlets and locations.
HomeGoods introduced its long-awaited e-commerce in September 2021. Part of the company’s initial hesitation was due to the business model: offering low costs and the excitement of seeking reduced prices that only comes from brick-and-mortar retail, RetailDive reported.
Klinger said on the August earnings call that TJX plans to open about 125 new retail outlets in fiscal 2024. TJX’s second-quarter net sales were $12. 8 billion, an 8% increase over the same quarter last year.
Some shoppers are taking to social media to express their sadness over the closure of the HomeGoods website.
One X posted, “@HomeGoods, this is devastating. “
Another shopper posted on the brand’s Facebook page: “I just got the email informing you that it will be the last time you buy groceries online later this week. I’m here to tell you that I’ll cancel my card and possibly not travel more than 40 miles at the nearest store (which is small and picks up anyway). “
