OLYMPIC GAMES

Olympic gold medalist Wladimir Klitschko has joined Ukraine’s fight against the IOC’s plan to allow some Russians to participate in the Paris 2024 Summer Games.

The former heavyweight champion warned in a video message posted Monday that sports leaders would be complicit in the war if Russia’s athletes and his best friend, the Belarusian military, could compete in the upcoming Olympics.

Last week, the International Olympic Committee set out its favorite path for Russians and Belarusians who have brazenly supported the war to qualify for Paris and compete in 18 months as neutral athletes without a flag or anthem. The qualifying events would likely take place in Asia.

The softening of the IOC’s recommendation last February, that sports bodies exclude Russia and Belarus from overseas events, angered Ukraine, which warned it could simply boycott Paris.

Klitschko’s minute filmed next to bomb-damaged buildings began “Dear Thomas Bach” in a direct challenge to the IOC president.

“The world is watching you, history will judge you. Good luck with your decision,” Klitschko said in Ukraine’s latest rejoinder seeking to strongly link Bach to Olympic policy for Russia.
