Stanisław Żaryn, the Polish government’s representative for space coverage, noted that this is Russia’s reaction to the country’s constant assistance to Ukraine, Ukrinform reports in reference to the Polish government’s website.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Poland has been a constant target of the Kremlin’s hybrid cyberattack efforts.
“Hostile activity in cyberspace against Poland has intensified recently. This is the result of our active participation in helping Ukraine, which is struggling (in opposition to the aggressor – editor’s note), as well as our determination to help Kyiv on the foreign stage. Through hostile moves in cyberspace, Russia needs to exert pressure on Poland as Ukraine’s frontline country and key best friend on NATO’s eastern flank,” Żaryn stressed.
According to the official, cyberattacks target public management networks, as well as personal companies, media and users. Companies in strategic industries, such as energy or defense, are in the specific threat zone.
Żaryn reported that some hostile movements this year may be directly similar to the activities of pro-Russian hacker groups. Parliament’s online page (Sejm. gov. pl).
“Knowledge analysis showed that the denial of access to the site was the result of an attack through the pro-Russian organization NoName057 (16). One of the organization’s designated targets on Telegram, the website of our parliament,” the spokesman said.
He added that the attack is a reaction to the adoption through the Polish Sejm of a solution that identifies Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Żaryn noted that such incidents in cyberspace are typical of Russia’s reaction to measures taken through other countries that Russia considers unfavorable or inconvenient. He said teams of Kremlin-linked hackers launch dDos attacks, phishing and ransomware to destabilize, intimidate and sow chaos.
In addition, Russian hackers use fake Internet sites to carry out competitive actions. For example, in early December, the CSIRT GOV Poland team obtained data on an online phishing page posing as the government platform Gov. pl. According to the content of the fake online page, it gave the impression that the President of Poland had signed a decree on the payment of reimbursement to EU-funded Polish citizens. Through the “I wish I knew” link, the hackers attempted to download users’ non-public knowledge. before redirecting them to a phishing payment card page under the guise of charging a payment to verify the EU refund. The Homeland Security Agency blocked the malicious effort.
“This is a typical operation that aims to sow chaos, devalue the state, as well as collect non-public knowledge and commit monetary extortion,” the commissioner stressed.
Żaryn also said that cyberattacks are increasingly being used to spread fake Russian data and download knowledge and sensitive data through Russian intelligence services. He added that the operation done through those two strategies is called GhostWriter. These are attacks on the email addresses and social media accounts of public figures from Central and Eastern European countries, basically Poland. He noted that the perpetrators seek to take control of news platforms to spread false Russian data. In recent months, this operation has focused on Poland.
The official said that to counter those threats in cyberspace, the third alert point, Charlie-CRP, has been put in Poland.
