A new Russian missile barrage hit Ukraine on Thursday, killing at least 3 other people and cutting the force into maximum spaces ahead of New Year’s celebrations.
At first, Belarus said a Ukrainian missile landed on its territory, prompting a diplomatic outcry and a suggestion from Kyiv that the incident may have been orchestrated through Moscow.
“We have another 3 people killed and six wounded, plus a child,” Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi said of the day’s bombing.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the maximum regions had power in sub-zero temperatures after the bombing.
“It is especially complicated in the Kyiv region and the capital, the Lviv region, Odessa and the region, Kherson and the region, the Vinnytsia region and Transcarpathia,” the Ukrainian leader said.
The missiles hit the western Ivano-Frankivsk region, at the foot of the picturesque Carpathian Mountains, about 1,000 kilometers (about six hundred miles) from Russia.
Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhny, said Russia introduced cruise missiles, 54 of which were shot down.
Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said the latest attacks came just as Ukrainians were preparing to celebrate the New Year.
“Senseless barbarism,” he tweeted.
On Thursday, Belarus’ Defense Ministry said its forces shot down a Ukrainian missile near the western city of Brest on the border with Poland, releasing photographs of the fallen fragments.
Minsk authorities summoned Ukraine’s ambassador to protest the incident, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
Later on Thursday, Kyiv said the incident could have been just a Russian ploy to try to drag Belarus into the conflict.
– Kyiv, Lviv strike –
In southern Kyiv, Georgiy Yatsenko, 65, said he hid in the basement with 3 of his grandchildren when there was an explosion.
“There is no glass left in the windows. Everything flew. “
He would like to cover them with plastic to protect himself from the cold, he added. “We have to do everything we can to survive. The most important thing is that other people are alive. “
In the historic city of Lviv, forced cuts have paralyzed public transport.
“We are trapped, we are bloodless on this tram, what can we do?” said Iryna Ivaneyko, tram driver.
“Some other people are afraid, some are not. It is war. We have to face this and win. “
– ‘Russian crimes’ –
The attacks took place 10 months after Moscow invaded Ukraine. In recent months, Russian moves have focused on the power grid, leaving millions of people bloodless in the middle of winter.
The U. S. Embassy in Kyiv said Moscow is stepping up its crusade of attacks, “exercising cruelly, without bloodshed and darkness” against Ukraine.
“Russia needs peace with Ukraine,” British Ambassador Melinda Simmons said. “Russia needs Ukraine to be subjugated. “
EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell said Russian troops killed civilians “deliberately. “
“There will be no impunity for Russian crimes,” he added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in a video link in a rite that saw the commissioning of new warships and a nuclear-powered submarine.
Western intelligence agencies said Russia suffers to fulfill wishes for munitions for the invasion, which Moscow denied.
Moscow has blamed pro-Kyiv forces for Russian army sites and civilian infrastructure.
On Thursday, Russian forces shot down a drone near Engels, a key air base many miles from the Ukrainian border.
Engels’ base has already been twice this month in fatal attacks that Moscow blames on Ukraine.
Moscow said the movements in Ukrainian infrastructure were a reaction to an explosion on the Kerch Bridge connecting the Russian mainland with Crimea, which was annexed through Moscow in 2014.
