European buyers of electric cars will have plenty of options in 2023 as domestic brands introduce many new models and Chinese ones come into effect, but don’t expect to find a big improvement in diversity or technology.
A recurring challenge with many electric cars on sale in Europe, with the exception of Tesla and some Kia, is inflated diversity claims and poor performance on the road. For example, an Audi E-tron 9five kWh offers a battery diversity of 241 miles, but only fills up to an average of 180 miles. The road trip was mediocre. Early adopters don’t seem to care, however, after about five years of higher sales, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Western Europe are expected to stagnate in 2023. This stagnation is due more to technical aspects, such as the termination of some government subsidies. that have interfered with growth, than the expected recession.
With all new cars available, this will at least put downward pressure on prices. But don’t expect the end of anxiety or the freedom to stick to internal combustion engine (ICE) cars in the future.
There are still virtually no battery electric vehicles (BEVs) that average workers can afford, at the lower end of the market are many so-called “small city cars” disguised as reasonable electric cars. But if you need safe and comfortable mobility, those cars are classified through regulators in the category of “quadricycles. “They are not obliged to comply with the rules of protection in case of a turn of the destination of the car in the European Union.
In my opinion, European car brands continue to break out of stagnation by using larger batteries to reflect the qualities of ICE energy. This is doomed to failure because the more they try, the less expensive and heavier cars become and the more carbon dioxide (CO2) the car becomes. They emit the production and disposal process.
The electric car revolution demands a new approach. We will have to take advantage of the strengths of electric cars. BEVs are unbeatable for short-distance urban and rural travel. The industry will offer cars with, for example, a diversity of one hundred miles, a top speed of 60 mph, space for 2 and 2 children and car-like safety, according to Euro NCAP, the European assessment program for new cars. It would be better for traveling, shopping, and rushing to school; Price: $10,000 after taxes. If you want long-haul capability, buy a plug-in hybrid (smaller rechargeable battery than regular BEV with, say, 50 miles of diversity, plus 400 miles of an ICE).
Schmidt Automotive Research reports that BEV sales expansion in Western Europe slowed in 2022 and will stagnate in 2023 at around 1. 5 million and a market share of 14. 5%. %) in 2030. Western Europe includes the top five markets of Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain.

Investment researcher Jefferies expects sales in the 27 EU countries to reach 3. 9 million (31. 4% market share) by 2025, up from just over 1. 5 million (13Array1%) in 2022. BEV sales then rise to just under 10 million. (75. 9%) in 2030 and 12. 7 million (94. 4%) in 2035.
These are, in fact, heroic predictions and will only be achieved if brands can produce something like the $10,000 BEV for the entry-level mass market.
The China sales rush is aimed at today’s European mainstream, with Volkswagen cars and their logos, Hyundai, Kia and the Stellantis subsidiary organization on their sites. The Chinese challenge includes the Great Wall of China’s Ora logo and its Funky Cat sedan. , Dong Feng’s Seres 3 SUV and BYD’s Atto 3 SUV. SAIC’s MG has already achieved wonderful good fortune with its compact SUVs. to succeed in 100,000 by 2022.
Surprisingly, the moment phase of the Chinese plan aims to advance the luxury market on the territory of BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Porsche. This will come with BYD Seal and Great Wall’s Wey Coffee 02, which is a hybrid add-on. Polestar, the Geely BEV, Volvo’s subsidiary of China, is launching its “3,” and Geely also plans to open its Zeekr logo. Another premium competition comes with NIO, Xpeng and Aiways. Good looks to sell those machines in a segment where logo strength is crucial.

This Chinese plan may have only included a third item, a competitor in the nonexistent segment at $10,000. In China, there is such a small vehicle. This is the Hongguang MINI EV, manufactured through a joint venture between General Motors of the United States. Last year, sales in China reached just $400,000, with a value close to $5,000. It was planned to sell a European version, redesigned to meet European Union protection criteria worth close to $10,000, but those are now on hold. It may not be long before those small, affordable BEVs arrive.
French consultancy Inovev estimates that Chinese sales in Europe will nearly double this year to 150,000. By 2030, the Chinese will gain between 12. 5% and 20% of the European BEV market, representing sales of between 725,000 and 1. 2 million vehicles.
New European competitors for the BEV in 2023 come with the Audi A6 e-tron, BMW i5, Fiat Panda, Mercedes EQE, Mini (BMW) Aceman, Countryman and Mini electric, and Volkswagen ID. Aero.
As for the low-priced empty BEV category, contenders on sale in 2023 come with quadricycles such as the Renault Mobilize Duo, formerly Twizy, Citroën Ami and Microlino. The Microlino is based on the BMW Isetta bubble car from the 1950s, but now has a fourth wheel, an electric motor and stays up to the single front door. Prices for the Microlino start at $16,000, and since it only meets EU motorcycle protection standards, it’s too expensive and puts passengers at risk.
Expect those insufficient models to make a quick launch when the Hongguang MINI or its arrive in Europe.

Earlier this year, I reported on Iain Dale, star of British radio station LBC, and his infuriating fun with an electric car. Dale said that earlier this month.
“I bought it (Audi e-tron) a little over a year ago, but I’ve hated it almost from day one. In addition to the poor promotion diversity you can really achieve, my joy was that even if you planned your vacation correctly and figured out where you deserve to recharge, long vacations were full of pitfalls. Within a year of owning the car, I only drove 5,000 miles with it. On Thursday, I returned it and replaced it with another diesel. It’s possible the environmentalists will yell at me, but until the electric car infrastructure is adequate, I suspect the only other people satisfied with their electric cars will be those who travel short distances,” Dale said in a Daily Telegraph column.
Dale never embarked on a long road vacation in the south of France or Spain to test his high-speed cruising capability. Given that the speed limit in France and Spain is the equivalent of 80 mph, which would likely become at least 85 mph, I guess the more productive time would be at least twice that of an ICE vehicle.
