BERLIN/PARIS (AP) — Workers at Amazon sites in Germany and France pulled equipment on Black Friday, part of an international movement to target the online store on one of the busiest grocery shopping days of the year with orders for better wages.

In Germany, protests broke out in nine of Amazon’s 20 warehouses in the country. On Friday morning, the company said the vast majority of its workers in Germany were working normally.

The French unions SUD and CGT have for removals in the 8 warehouses of the country.

Amazon France said there have been no symptoms of disruption to operations so far. Two French union officials said they did not expect a large turnout because the emerging charge of living prompts workers to ask for overtime.

The Verdi union, which called a strike in Germany, demanded that the company recognize collective agreements in the retail and mail order sector and called for a new collective agreement on operating conditions.

French unions have demanded a higher cash bonus for the run-up to Christmas, in which warehouse staff are asked to work long overtime.

“As an employer, Amazon offers excellent pay, benefits and advancement opportunities, all in an attractive and attractive environment,” an Amazon spokesperson in Germany said in a statement.

Among other things, the spokesperson according to Son pointed to a salary for Amazon fulfillment workers in Germany starting in September, with a starting salary of thirteen euros ($13. 52) per hour or more, adding bonuses.

The average salary after two years of painting is more than 35,000 euros gross per year, Amazon Germany said, adding that they come with extras like subsidies for public shipping and corporate pension plans.

“This is the first time Amazon has held a strike day,” said Monika Di Silvestre, Verdi’s representative for Amazon workers.

“This is very important, because a giant global corporation like Amazon cannot stand up to it locally, regionally or nationally,” he added.

An Amazon spokesperson in France said all warehouses earning less than €3100 a month will receive a one-time bonus of €500, in addition to a €150 year-end bonus agreed with the unions.

The French union SUD demanded a Black Friday bonus of 1,000 euros, double the remuneration presented through Amazon, as a bonus of 150 euros commensurate with the weekend worked in the fourth quarter.

LDS manager Mathieu Ciserane said another 60 people were protesting outdoors at the Brétigny-sur-Orge site near Paris this morning, and another 50 stayed at the home of a total of 5,000 temporary and full-time workers there.

Amazon in the United States did not respond to a request for comment.
