For approximately 30 years, WeCareJax has provided specialized, number one care to uninsured adults in Duval County.
And for more than 12 years, the nonprofit has revered some of the “amazing. “
We Care Jacksonville: Jacksonville Nonprofits Hope to Connect More Uninsured Residents to Primary Care
What is WeCareJax?
Founded in 1993, WeCareJax is a network of physicians, nurses, fitness professionals, hospitals, network clinics and volunteer partners. Since its inception, the network has grown to approximately 500 volunteers and serves approximately 1700 patients a year.
According to the agency, about $20 million in physical care was provided to uninsured adults living at or below the federal poverty line. Otherwise, those patients would not get care or invade emergency rooms.

The COVID-19 pandemic “has revealed so many gaps in our local fitness service delivery system, and it’s our volunteer doctors, providers and nurses who step in and fill those gaps every day,” Strain said. And life-threatening illnesses get the physical care they need, they can’t qualify or buy physical health insurance or pay out-of-pocket for care. “
According to WeCareJax, at least 13% of Duval County citizens between the ages of 18 and 64 have health insurance.
“Over the past year, we’ve met new volunteer providers, recruited more case management nurses to help patients facing complex remedial plans, and noticed that our doctors and volunteers are up to the demanding situations left after more than two years of pandemic disruption,” says Presion.
One of the challenges, he said, is more cancer diagnoses later in the disease than ever before, due to a decline in the number of patients accessing screenings like regimen mammograms during the pandemic. This means that cases take longer to achieve remission and more care is needed.
Since breast cancer cases have made up the majority of WeCareJax cancer cases over the past year, two of the Caring Awards will be related contributions:
Crozier’s specialties come with medical oncology, internal medicine and hematology with spaces of expertise in breast cancer and clinical trials.
“Being diagnosed with cancer is one of the most expectant moments in a person’s life,” he said. “I need to do my part to make sure all patients have access to care and a multidisciplinary support team. “
Being able to provide this to uninsured patients “is a rewarding feeling because I can help patients who are going through a confusing journey by educating them about their illness and how our team at Baptist MD Anderson can treat them,” he said.
WeCareJax shows that “our network stays cohesive,” Crozier said. “When one of us is faced with a fitness issue, it affects us all. Providing care for the uninsured and underinsured is critical to us and we have many resources in Jacksonville for the network. “

“The partnership with WeCareJax is an opportunity to revel in some of the basic goals of the healthcare system: to treat Americans with dignity and compassion,” Grossling said. “By opening its doors to uninsured patients in our community, it is turning the lives of families in need. “
