As the midterm election season gets underway, web-based platforms will begin to implement enhanced protections to protect themselves from virtual threats to the democratic process. While each platform has other policies and approaches, from warnings and educational reminders in the most sensible cases. from news sources to limitations on responses and forwarding: a non-unusual strategy is at the heart of many of the features implemented on the web: they all incentivize users to slow down a bit. These efforts contrast with a long-standing course and reflect a broader reconsideration of what was once the industry’s number one enemy: friction.
Yasmin Green is the CEO of Jigsaw, a unit within Google that addresses threats to public companies. He leads an interdisciplinary team that researches and develops technical responses to a variety of global security challenges, adding violent extremism, repressive censorship, hate and harassment, and destructive disinformation.
In the generation industry, we think of “friction” as every single thing that stands between an individual and their goals. And getting rid of it completely once is a common goal. Teams have worked for years to reduce page load times and formulate responses across milliseconds, and corporations have invested millions in developing and testing designs and user flows, all to make sure each and every interaction is as fast and effortless as possible.
The focus on speed and ease of use makes sense: generation has been used to meet complex responsibilities more quickly and easily. It exceeds the speed at which we can process it completely.
I was reminded of this point through the effects of a study conducted by MIT academics several years ago, published in Nature last year. In a survey of American adults, Americans said it was far more important to them that what they shared online was accurate than surprising, funny, in line with their political views or even just plain interesting. In addition, respondents were incredibly smart in identifying right and wrong titles, even when those titles went against their political beliefs. Despite this, when presented with a set of true and misleading headlines and asked which ones they would consider sharing online, the accuracy of the headline had virtually no effect on what participants said they would consider. exchange of consideration.
However, an indisputable design update can especially adjust the likelihood that other people will consider the data to be false. Serving as “precision cues” for people, asking them to rate the accuracy of an unrelated name before sharing it, you can divert your attention from an instinctive reaction to its underlying values, adding your own commitments to accuracy.
A meta-analysis of 20 experiments that led Americans to think about accuracy found that those types of interventions can share misleading data by 10 percent. Universities of Regina and Nottingham, more revealed that these invitations are in force in 16 countries and in the 6 inhabited continents.
Prompts can also inspire Americans to have deeper interaction with data through other means. A feature implemented via Twitter that invites users to read an article before retweeting it if they hadn’t already seen it, led to a 40% increase in the number of Americans clicking on the article before sharing it on their networks.
Once you start looking, be aware of the small frictions in each location, and there’s solid evidence that they work. In 2020, Twitter began experimenting with a feature that tricked other people who responded to others with obscene or abusive language into reconsidering their tweet sooner. Publish. According to Twitter, 34% of those who won those activations replaced their original reaction or made the decision not to respond at all. In addition, users who won the spark were 11% less likely to post harsh reactions. in the future. While those numbers may not sound staggering, with more than 500 million tweets sent each day, they contribute to a particularly healthier online environment.

A similar experiment conducted through the social interaction platform OpenWeb, leveraging Jigsaw’s Perspective API, found that 34% of commenters on a variety of sites, including AOL, Salon, and NewsWeek, reviewed their posts when asked to talk about their harsh language. those who edited their comments, 54% edited them to be authorized. Users of the experimental organization who won those activations were also more likely to return to the site and have interaction in the future, and the network as a whole delights in the higher ratings obtained.
When designed and implemented conscientiously, those types of virtual speed bumps don’t try to tell Americans what to think or limit their actions. Instead, they slow down the web at a more human pace, allowing Americans to take a moment to read about the data they find before acting. And while some moments of friction can be problematic, the benefits are easy to understand. Just think of some of the more mundane friction moments that clutter our daily virtual interactions, from browser warnings about malicious sites you have. to click on the now-not-unusual “cancel send” feature in email clients, which keep emails for only a few seconds before sending them in case you want to fix a typo or have them come with the attachment, once again.
Online harm has several reasons and comprehensive approaches are needed to address them all, however, the promising concrete effects of adding friction inspire us to look for opportunities to apply them in a wider diversity of scenarios. In the future, platforms may simply seek to warn Americans before sharing sensitive or personal data on public channels, or serve as an automatic switch to avoid piles of dogs online, leading users to ask if they need to contribute to mass harassment.
Digital technologies have allowed us to do more, and do it faster, than in any past period. And therein lies its power. But from time to time, especially at our peak critical moments, like the coming weeks, we all want to slow down.
