The MTA now has a snack as daring, aromatic and like a subway ride.
In honor of the subway system’s 118th anniversary, two of New York’s best-known sandwich department stores teamed up to create the exclusive 1904 submarine. The delicious sandwich is a limited-edition collaboration between Katz’s Delicatessen and Alidoro.
It’s made from a bunch of Katz pastrami, which is topped with a bed of highly spiced coleslaw with Calabrian-Dijon pepper and some sticky candied garlic, then topped with aged provolone cheese. The sandwich is served in a sourdough rye baguette.
MTA President Janno Lieber swallowed two samples at The Moynihan Train Hall on Thursday and proclaimed them delicious. Unlike another MTA president, Joe Lhota, who once banned food on the subway, Lieber approved eating the sandwich on the subway, respectfully.

“It’s a fabulous garlic confit, but it’s less fabulous if it’s in the suit or jacket of the wearer next to you,” Lieber said. “People are in a hurry, young people have to go to school, other people have to eat in transit, so I’ve never been one to say they ban food. But I think everyone has to be respectful of those next to them.

The sandwich costs $14 and will be available through October at 4 Alidoro locations, not counting the original Sullivan Street location (which is unfortunately the closest to the WNYC/Gothamist newsroom).
