Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and ČEZ, founded in the Czech Republic, are combining to advance the deployment of nuclear technology, adding small modular reactors (SMRs). The corporations said they signed a memorandum on Oct. 11, aiming to “reduce financial, technical and scheduling dangers for both parties in their respective long-term projects. “
OPG is Ontario’s largest electric power producer. The company owns 75 power plants in the province with a combined capacity of more than 18 GW. In addition to 66 hydroelectric plants, its fleet includes two nuclear power plants: the 3. 5 GW Darlington Generating Station and the 3. 1 GW Pickering Generating Station (Figure 1). OPG says nuclear power supplies about 60 per cent of Ontario’s electricity today.
“Ontario Power Generation is a world-class nuclear operator with decades of delight in delivering a safe, blank and reliable nuclear force,” OPG President and CEO Ken Hartwick said in a statement. “By operating with entities like ČEZ, we can leverage our combined enjoyment to expand and build the new generation needed to push long-term and decarbonization goals. “
ČEZ is one of the largest energy corporations in Europe. OPG and ČEZ are committed to achieving net 0 targets by 2040, and the generation of complex reactors can contribute to this mission.
As part of the MOU, OPG and ČEZ will provide percentage data similar to the deployment of new nuclear projects. OPG said new nuclear generation, adding SMR, is “an indispensable component of the electric power mix needed to decarbonize the power sector. “and the economy in general. ” OPG is in the process of implementing an SMR on its Darlington and has already obtained environmental assessment approval.
In December 2021, OPG announced that it would be working with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy on the Darlington SMR project. Ge Hitachi’s BWRX-three hundred (Figure 2) is a three hundred MWe water-cooled herbal flow SMR with passive protection systems. This is the tenth evolution of GE’s boiling water reactor (BWR). The company says the BWRX-300 represents the simplest and most innovative REB design since nuclear reactors began in 1955.
On March 10 of this year, OPG announced that it had awarded a $32 million contract to E. S. Fox Limited for the first phase of preparation and supporting infrastructure for the Darlington SMR project. of water, electricity, data generation and roads to the Array. The Darlington RMS is expected to be operational until the end of this decade.
ČEZ is also no stranger to the nuclear force. Lately it operates two nuclear power plants (NPCs) in the Czech Republic. The four-unit Dukovany site (Figure 3) is the first nuclear power plant built on Czech territory and, according to the company, is “one of the most important, reliable and economically advantageous sources of force” in the ČEZ fleet. Dukovany is situated 30 kilometres (km) southeast of Třebíč. It produces about 20% of the total electrical energy intake in the Czech Republic.
The Dukovany power plant has 4 VVER 440 style V 213 pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The individual assemblies were commissioned between 1985 and 1987. La originally total installed electrical capacity was 1,760 MW, but generation gradually increased through turbine upgrades, power systems and technical improvements. . Today, the plant has an installed capacity of 2,040 MW.
ČEZ also operates the two-unit Temelin nuclear power plant, located about 24 km from the South Bohemian capital, České Budějovice. Temelin has two REP VVER 1000 Type V 320. The sets entered service in 2000 and 2003, respectively. The plant produces approximately the same electrical energy as the Dukovany plant.
Like OPG, ČEZ has taken the first steps towards expanding its nuclear fleet in Temelin and Dukovany. “As a company, our goal is to find new answers and energy technologies,” Tomáš Pleskac, board member and head of ČEZ’s New Energy Division. , he said in a statement. ” We are preparing the structure of a new nuclear unit in Dukovany and the next area allocation in Temelin, where the first SMR could only be built in the first part of the next decade. The collaboration with OPG is a logical step for us.
“Ontario is proud to lead the way in blank nuclear technologies,” Ontario Energy Minister Todd Smith said in a statement. will help reduce emissions while ensuring energy security for the world. “
