Fighting continued intermittently throughout the day despite calls for a ceasefire in Russia, which the Kremlin press secretary says exerts significant influence in the region.

“It is complicated to overestimate the role of the Russian Federation, the role of Putin personally,” Dmitry Peskov told reporters, according to Reuters. “The president is naturally doing everything he can to defuse tensions at the border. “
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it had negotiated a ceasefire on Tuesday morning, with subsequent reports reporting that the truce had failed.
Armenia’s Defense Ministry said fighting had ceased in some areas, but Azerbaijani forces had yet to advance into its eastern territory.
Civilian infrastructure was also reportedly broken in the attacks, but the number of civilian casualties in Armenia is still unknown.

Azerbaijan claimed the attacks were a reaction to the Armenian army’s “large-scale provocations” after its troops allegedly laid mines and fired on its soldiers.
Tuesday’s clash stems from decades of aggression over a disputed mountainous territory in the South Caucasus known as Nagorno-Karabakh, which around the world identifies as part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of Armenian-backed forces since 1994.

Russia deployed some 2,000 peacekeepers to the region in 2020 when a six-week war killed more than 6,600 people after Azerbaijan recaptured large swathes of Nagorno-Karabakh and ended only after Moscow facilitated a peace deal.
Russia said Tuesday that the fight will be resolved “exclusively through political and diplomatic means. “
