With performances over a four-day era through a varied set of artists such as Dua Lipa, Metallica and J. Cole, this year’s Lollapalooza was the first to include drones as a component of the event. In partnership with the T-Mobile and Google Pixel phones, a specially created Verge Aero drone display was held in Dua Lipa’s Friday night space.
“We introduced the drone’s display on T-Mobile’s 5G network, employing a Google Pixel phone,” said Mason Hayes of Verge Aero, the designer and pilot of the drone’s display. “We have an app created through Verge Aero that we can load onto smartphones and cause drones into their pre-programmed flight formations, and it worked perfectly. “
Verge Aero has worked in the past with T-Mobile, partnering on a New Year’s eve show starring Justin Bieber in 2021.
The pershapeance saw the drones take the form of a variety of messages and graphics, such as an alien UFO, a cassette, the Chicago flag and skyline, as well as a center and rainbow. This collection of graphic effects was designed by Hayes using Aero’s Verge programming and visualization software, along with groups at Lollapalooza, Google, and T-Mobile. The screen was arranged in such a way that it did not provide any dead space, with the three hundred drones continually acquiring new forms and effects.
“We had a wonderful launch site for the Lollapalooza drone show, just outside the perimeter of the festival fences, which was a flat surface and away from the crowds,” Hayes added. “The team was there and everything went well, with wonderful feedback. of everyone involved and, most importantly, it went well with the festival goers. My family is originally from Chicago, so it was a privilege to put art in the sky using Verge Aero drones while admiring the famous city skyline.
