The United States plans to use a giant drone to test hypersonic missiles, and it is a beast with a wingspan of almost 40 m.
The manufacturer of the giant RQ-4 RangeHawk northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) drone will use the Department of Defense’s Test Resource Management Center’s (TRMC) high-altitude, long-duration, unmanned cell flight verification system, called SkyRange.
“Our RQ-4 RangeHawks will have the emerging elegance of hypersonic weapons and provide a combination of range, staying power and payload capability,” said Jane Bishop, vice president and general manager of global surveillance at Northrop Grumman.
“These aircraft will continue to play their role in important national security missions, while allowing us to bring world-class aircraft design, modification, operation and sustaining paints to the Grand Forks community. “
Apparently, RangeHawks are less expensive and more effective than built-in sensors.
“Northrop Grumman’s RangeHawk is perfectly suited to gathering insights by offering persistent station time located closer to the flight path and agility to adapt to the dynamics of a control environment – a force multiplier as we evolve in critical national security capabilities,” said TRMC’s acting director and director. Senior MP George Rumford said.
