PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — City officials and network leaders took to the streets of Southwest Philadelphia Wednesday in a bid to combat the city’s gun violence crisis. The goal of the occasion is to get a first-hand look at some of the issues affecting this network. , as well as a review of some successful approaches to reducing violence.
On Wednesday afternoon, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw and Councilman Kenyatta Johnson walked through blocks 6400 and 6500 Kingsessing Street, going door-to-door to pay attention to voters’ concerns.
Southwest Philadelphia is one of the hardest-hit parts of our city in the face of the gun violence crisis. The Commissioner was well earned through the neighbors. Many were all smiles as they took pictures with the commissioner and spoke candidly about some of the disorders they face daily when walking and living on those streets. “It’s a big difference, it’s a big difference when we drive certain blocks instead of when you get out of a car and walk. You start to see things you don’t see in the car. You have the opportunity to faint and participate, and then other people feel more comfortable telling you what’s going on in their lives, rather than just a wave when you walk beyond,” Outlaw said. “So, one, it’s vital to have the boots on the floor and see for ourselves and be able to hear firsthand how we’re impacting other people, if any, whether they’re smart or bad.
