The Irish prime minister said the controversy over a letter about the Ukrainian conflict written by the president’s wife had caused embarrassment.
Micheal Martin said Sabina Higgins clarified the matter after issuing a statement in defense of the letter that critics said established an equivalence between the moves of Russia and Ukraine.
Ms Higgins, the wife of President Michael D. Higgins, condemned Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and said she was “horrified” by the complaint she won in recent days.
Martin said Ireland is a democracy and that other people are entitled to their own views, and all those who seek peace in Ukraine.
Ms Higgins wrote a letter a week from the Irish Times criticising an editorial on the conflict.
The letter said the fighting would continue until the world “persuaded Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept a ceasefire and negotiations. “
Senators and government commentators criticized Higgins for the letter, which was also published on the president’s official website, before it was withdrawn shortly thereafter.
