Siemens Gamesa wins an order for offshore wind power in Japan

German renewable power company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has received an order for offshore wind for green Power Investment’s Ishikari offshore wind allocation in Japan.

The 112 MW wind allocation is about five kilometers off the coast of Ishikari Bay in Hokkaido, Japan.

As a component of the contract, SGRE will acquire 14 of its SG 8. 0-167 DD offshore wind turbines, with a capacity of 8 MW and a rotor of 167 m.

The SG 8. 0-167 DD turbine would be the first to obtain ClassNK certification, as it was deemed to meet all the technical criteria required for the Ishikari project.

The Ishikari assignment is the time when the commercial-scale wind farm earns ClassNK certification, which is required for the Japanese to approve construction.

Marc Becker, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s Offshore Business Unit, said: “Green Power Investment’s trust in Siemens Gamesa is stimulating and we look forward to delivering the Ishikari project.

“We will build on our onshore business established in Japan, with only around 1 GW already installed or in service.

“These offshore wind turbines and this service agreement are an opportunity to bring more clean, renewable energy to the country’s energy mix.

“In addition, it is a testament to our generation shown that our SG 8. 0-167 DD device is the first offshore wind turbine to achieve ClassNK certification. “

SGRE plans to begin installing paints from next July and has also signed a 15-year full-service contract for the project.

Russell Cato, Managing Director of Siemens Gamesa Japan, said: “With over 20 years of local experience, Siemens Gamesa is committed to the Japanese wind energy market and is confident that we can contribute to the local offshore wind industry.

“With Green Power Investment, we see many opportunities for the local chain and employment, and we look to the future to work with them on the Ishikari offshore wind project. “
