Thirty-six men attempted 14 separate escapes from the maximum-security criminal over the years, and nearly all were arrested or not from 1934 to 1963 (when the criminal closed), according to various reports.
Decades later, swimmers have made the “Alcatraz Escape” a sporting occasion that presents risks only when navigating the harmful current, but also due to the temperature of the water without bloodshed that can drop to 16 degrees C (60 degrees F).
Oh, and white sharks also patrol the wider area.
NY LIFEGUARD RETURNS TO WORK AFTER SHARK ATTACK
Rich Carroll without fear of all this.
The 54-year-old high school football coach at St. Francis Prep in Fresh Meadows, N. Y. , told Fox Digital News in a phone interview that he plans to swim the roughly 2-mile course from Alcatraz to the St. Francis yacht. Club in San Francisco: All to help increase the budget for your school’s soccer program, which desperately wants a new board.
It is also a role-playing style for others in terms of maintaining good physical fitness and well-being.
Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim 2022 takes position on Sunday, August 7.
“I started swimming and fell in love with the game again,” he told Fox News Digital. “I came through Alcatraz Swim on the web and thought, ‘What a wonderful challenge for the to-do list. ‘”
Carroll underwent a general knee replacement in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
“Once [my doctor] gave me the green light, I received education for my ‘big escape. ‘”
To help rehabilitate his knee, he swims, and has also taken an interest in guided freestyle events (swimming in seawater), adding the Alcatraz swimming event, hosted by Sharkfest, the open water excursion group.
“I contacted my orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Kevin Jiang, M. D. , of New York Presbyterian Hospital,” Carroll said.
“Once he gave me a thumbs up, I was educated for my great escape. “
Carroll has set a goal to raise $10,000 for his football program. He’s already outgrown that, but he says anything he raises the most will be used for his student-athletes.
On their website, Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim 2022 obviously sets the point of competition in swimming required for such an event.
“This swim is NOT for BEGINNERS,” the site notes. “This occasion is reserved for experienced open water swimmers. You’ll be able to swim comfortably a mile in a pool in less than 40 minutes. “
While Carroll considers himself a pool swimmer, he told Fox Digital News that freestyle is an absolutely different beast.
“I got to the other side of Alcatraz Swim on it and thought, ‘What a to-do list challenge. ‘”
Any swimmer attempting a feat like this, be very careful when transitioning to open water.
Obstacles come with a lack of visibility and water temperature settings that are only about 20 degrees higher than the temperature of a pool.
Still, the biggest risk in training, the coach said, is backflows. “That’s the biggest danger,” Carroll said.
While the actual occasion will be challenging, education itself is a walk in the park.
“It’s a commitment,” he said. Start small, build your stamina and don’t do it alone. Swim with someone or an experienced swimmer,” he added for anyone else who can swim.
To prepare for the Aug. 7 event, Coach Carroll swam in pools and in the Atlantic Ocean along the shores of Long Island Beach.
However, while living in the open waters of New York, sharks pose a danger. Several shark attacks have occurred in the past month off the coast of Long Island.
George Gorman, regional director of New York State Parks on Long Island, told Fox Digital News that anyone who has an education in open water swimming deserves to swim where there are lifeguards on duty.
Also, other people swim with a friend.
Gorman said swimmers are aware of their landscape to avoid shark encounters. Swimmers avoid spaces where there is bait or bunker fish, he said, as sharks can feed in that area.
Anyone trained to swim in open water deserves to swim where there are lifeguards on call. Also, other people deserve to swim with a friend.
“If you see white caps coming out of nowhere, it can mean that bunker fish are nearby, which can also mean that a shark can also be there,” he warned.

And let’s go back for a moment to the existing pulls: Gorman advised that when swimming in pairs, other people keep a distance, often up to 25 feet, if you encounter a tear current. In this way, the other spouse has time to react, escape, and recover. help.
Gorman shared tips for getting stuck in an existing tear. First, never fight against what exists; instead, swim parallel to the shore until you realize that the existing one has diminished and you have come out of it. Then swim at an angle away from the existing one, towards the shore.
Experts say you have to think of rip currents as a squirrel wheel going out. He wants to stand next to her as she asks for help.
To fulfill his task of “escaping Alcatraz,” Rich Carroll said he relies on organizing Sharkfest guided tours so that proper precautions are taken.
You’ll face it as you navigate the rip currents surrounding Alcatraz.
Several tour teams plan loose swimming events across the country every year.
Warren Wallace is the founder and CEO of Odyssey Open Water Swimming and hosts several guided swimming events at Alcatraz throughout the year.
“We’ve noticed pool swimmers struggle with the transition to open water,” Wallace told Fox Digital News.
Swimming in Alcatraz can last between 30 minutes and an hour and a half, depending on the point and conditions of the swimmer.
The organization said in documents sent to participants that “due to the additional difficulty of swimming in open water compared to swimming in a pool, you can swim at least 2 to 2. 5 miles in a pool. “
The organization said the Alcatraz swim can last from 30 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the swimmer’s point and conditions.
Wallace said aid boats and kayakers attach to participants throughout the course and help them navigate the course and currents of the event.

“When we conduct giant Alcatraz public swims or small personal swims, we plan around the currents, create detailed protection plans, coordinate with the Coast Guard, and supply motor boats and kayaks while swimming,” Wallace said.
“Many of our captains and kayakers have supported many Alcatraz Swims, and this is vital for certain swimmers to have a successful experience,” he added.
Wallace explained that the one around Alcatraz is very strong. Swimmers do not take a direct path to the destination, but an indirect method that is navigated through guides to help compensate for the demanding situations that arise through treacherous waters.
Wallace also said sharks do not pose a risk to Alcatraz swimmers.

“They are not a genuine fear at all. There are wonderful white sharks not far from the bay, however, in general, they rarely enter the bay. “
STATE NICKNAME QUESTIONNAIRE: DO YOU REALLY KNOW THESE STATES?
Wallace said there are several species of smaller sharks in the bay that do not represent humans.
He added: “Of course we’re here with a security team if there’s ever been a shark attack, but it’s not something swimmers want to worry about. “
The organization also advised swimmers to wear wetsuits to cope with cooler water temperatures, wear glasses to see through the murky waters, and wear earplugs.

For those “concerned” about Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim, the site stores this information: “The Alcatraz swimming course may have an infamous reputation, but we can guarantee that [in 28 years] we have safely escorted more than 15,000 swimmers throughout this course. “
He adds: “The most important variable is the tides. Fortunately, our race director, Dave Horning, has swum the course 75 times and is familiar with the tides of the San Francisco Bay. In particular, we planned the date of our Alcatraz occasions around the tides. “
