Freshpet is recalling bags of dog food sold in stores in a dozen states and Puerto Rico due to possible salmonella contamination.
The dog food that was recalled was part of a batch destined for destruction, but instead “inadvertently shipped to stores in limited geographic markets over the past two weeks,” the company said in a statement issued by the Food and Drug Administration.
This includes more than a hundred Walmart retail outlets in Alabama and Georgia, as well as some Target retail outlets and other stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia.
The recall concerns 4. 5-pound bags of Freshpet Select Fresh From the Kitchen cooked homemade poultry recipe with an expiration date of Oct. 29, 2022, and UPC code 627975011673, the company said. Both are on the back of the bags.
Salmonella can endanger animals and people. In humans, the elderly, the very young, and the immunocompromised are especially vulnerable when handling infected products, especially if hands and countertops are thoroughly washed.
Other healthy people inflamed with salmonella may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. It can also lead to more serious conditions, according to fitness officials.
Dogs with salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some dogs will only have a minimum of appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but healthy dogs can be carriers and infect other animals and people.
Anyone who has questions or wishes to report adverse reactions can call (800) 285-0563 Monday through Friday from 9 a. m. m. a 9 p. m. Eastern Time and Saturday through Sunday from 9 a. m. m. a 1 p.
