Plans for a new discounted grocery store at the former Mothercare site, near Eyre Street and next to St Mary’s Gate on the ring road, have been submitted to Sheffield City Council.
The retail giant says the proposed supermarket would breathe new life into the vacant site, which it says is “increasingly deteriorated in appearance,” and create up to 40 jobs.
The premises would have 2,337 m² of inmates, with a sales area of 1,373 m², and would have 92 parkingArray adding six available and 8 positions for parents and children.
The 0. 73-hectare site is recently occupied by two giant retail units, which in the past were occupied by Mothercare and Staples and, more recently, by a charity shop and Theatre Deli, which has since found a new home in Sheffield.
It’s across the ring road from an existing Aldi store, with Decathlon across Eyre Street.
According to the plans, one of the existing constructions would be demolished and the remaining construction would be expanded to create the store and the related parking, access and landscaping.
Changes would be made to the layout of the car park and the existing one on Eyre Street, creating a new one on South Lane for deliveries.
The proposed supermarket would add to the new Lidl planned to update the Sports Direct that closes in High Street, Sheffield.
The app to make plans marks the latest step in Lidl’s immediate expansion plans, with the store opening many more outlets in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and beyond, adding Beauchief, Broomhill, Burngreave, Crystal Peaks, Ecclesall, Ecclesfield, Fir Vale, Fulwood, Sin Glead, Hillsborough, Holbrook, Meadowhall, Norton.
The application validated through the council on June 21, the popular consultation deadline for Americans to submit comments is July 19 and a resolution is expected until September 20.
So far, there is a comment from a member of the public who opposes the plans.
They say there are already 3 supermarkets within a five-mile radius, an Aldi, a Sainsbury’s and a Waitrose, and that the site would be more suitable for housing for the council to fulfill its purpose of creating 20,000 homes in the city centre.
